I thought I'd share a humorous example of what we try NOT to do on a photo session, and why its so important to find a photographer who can work with you in a natural setting, allowing your family to interact in a natural way. This is me and my sweet family celebrating the 4th of July: and it is a perfect example of what is so appealing about Lifestyle photography in contrast to "sit & say cheese" photography.

Here is a series of pics my sweet cousin snapped on the 4th of July for us. My kiddos are ages 4 and 1.5 - needless to say, sitting down, and smiling quietly for the camera does not work for them...you can see how successful we were in getting a single picture with everyone looking and smiling. :) And, even if it was possible, in reality, it doesn't really capture them as they are or the special relationships we share.

My job, as an on-location Lifestly photographer, is to allow my clients to sit back, relax, and enjoy a few hours of time together without worrying about how to sit, how to pose, and definately without any "SAY CHEESE!" moments. Lifestyle portraiture is all about capturing those moments as they really are, in an artistic beautiful way. It is what I love to do and what draws people to my work.

So next time you head out for family pictures, sit back, relax, and just enjoy each other...and some magical moments will unfold without you even trying! (That's MY job! :))

This was one of my most favorite sessions to do. Sandra and Jeremy were so great to work with and it was another great reminder of why I love my job! To get the opportunity to meet wonderful people, to catch a glimpse of their lives and relationships, and capture it for them artistically is incredible. This sweet couple had so much tender emotion for eachother and for their sweet baby on the way and were totally at ease in front of the camera. I left the session totally rejuvenated and recommitted to sharing such great emotion with my sweet husband and kids. Thanks so much guys - it was such an honor to be a part of this process with you. I have been a serious absent blogger the last few months. I have been soaking up some glorious time with my kiddos. My daughter will be four next week and my little guy is already 15 mths. Time just whirs past me....so, forgive my absence. I have been enjoying lots of time with my kiddos and promise to share some pics of what we've been up to. I have been brainstorming a lot and am getting ready for some promotions and changes to make JoDee Yost Photography more "me" so stay posted! Another year is here and I can't believe it. The last year has flown by...I say that every year, but this last year seemed especially fast. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday. I realize I've been missing in action but it has been a wonderful break. My hubby is officially half way through Law school and we had a wonderful holiday break. Gingerbread cookies, letters to Santa, foot-high snowmen, hot-cocoa, and family. Doesn't get better than that!

So my first session of the new year...I couldn't have had a cuter little model. Mrs. M. has been working her life away sewing me some adorable pettiskirts. I think she should open an Etsy shop for them....there is a glimpse of one here, but watch for their real showcase coming up. Here are a few from our indoor shoot...we'll be doing my favorite: a Lifestlye snow session this week. Can't wait!!

I am ever in awe at the variety of locations that Connecticut provides...rolling hills, gorgeous foliage, rural country farms, urban cities, and of course...the beach. I loved spending some time with these adorable boys exploring the wonder of chasing seagulls, rolling in the sand, drawing with seashells and so much more. So fun! We arrived near sunset and the colors were beautiful - oranges, peaches and blues. I think I'm in love.

This sweet mom didn't want to be in any of the pictures, but I just couldn't resist this moment. These tough little boys just adore their mom.

Sunshine Makes Me Happy

Meet the B.Family. Check out their stylish wardrobe! Ms.H called me the day of and asked for some ideas on "what to wear". I gave her a few ideas and when they pulled up for the session I was THRILLED with what she pulled together. I love the colors, patterns, and texture she pulled in...its not too "matchy matchy" and works great as a whole.

These guys did such a great job of just enjoying the time out as a family and letting the kids play and explore. There were horses to pet, apples to pick, wagons to ride and the kids had a great time. You get the best images when you can relax and have fun as a family rather than worrying about posing for the camera. We had some beautiful sunshine to work with during the session and I loved the result. Didn't they do great? Thanks so much guys!

Meet Mr.Q. This little guy is my little guy's best-bud. They were born 10 days apart. He is one of the smiliest kids I've ever photographed. He was so brave in the chilly weather...his little nose turned pink within about 10 minutes of starting but he stayed smiley for us the whole time. Mmmm...I love me my smiley guys.

It was so much fun watching these sweet sisters interact with eachother and their little baby brother. My B.S. degree is actually in Human Development with an emphasis on Child Development so I am always fascinated watching each little member of the family make their own place with their unique personalities. These siblings were as sweet as could be with eachother - and each one has their own flavor - which is what makes it perfect! Fall Fest Begins!

Saturday evening I had the pleasure of my first session to kick off the Fall season and it couldn't have been a more perfect family...Introducing the adorable B. Family: some of the funnest people I know. Despite how warm these sunset images look it was very chilly and these kiddos were especially brave. The nippy weather really took us all by surprise. Thanks so much guys!

If you have a Fall session booked, remember to come layered up to stay warm! I always suggest layering for artistic reasons. The variety of colors and textures that come with layering shirts/vests/sweaters/jackets/hats/scarves etc. is fantastic and really makes photographs dynamic. In Fall & Winter, this layering serves a functional purpose too (surprise!:)). There isn't a quicker way to spoil a session then to have freezing kids. So bring an extra bag if you need to, full of mix'n'match layering goodies, and maybe a thermos of hot cocoa and come ready to play!

I don't think litte girls come sweeter than Ms.A. I photographed her with her mom and pop last November for Christmas pics and was so excited to get to play with her again for Birthday pics. I can't believe how much she's grown up over the last 10 months. We went exploring for butterflies, ladybugs, walked down shady lanes, smelled flowers and played in the drinking fountain. I love photographing this age because the entire world is such a wonder to them. Thanks for the wonderful time guys!

And my absolute new favorite...I might just have to get this in a huge canvas for my studio...mmmmm...sugar & spice for sure.

Sometimes...ok lets be honest - ANYtime you set out to "get pictures" it sends chills of dread through dads, stress through moms, and kids get anxious and crazy. By the time you get to the session everyone is already pulling their hair out. This very weekend I had the honor of getting our family pics done and I found myself forgetting all the things I tell my clients...stressing about having everything and everyone look & act perfect. My hubby had to remind me, "Just relax, stop worrying, and breathe!" Once I did, things were a lot more enjoyable, and the pics got much more natural, or so my photographer friend tells me. (I get to see them tomorrow - yay!!)

I PROMISE getting photographs taken doesn't have to make you sweat! These adorable pics were taken of a niece and nephew of mine this summer while we were having a BBQ at the park. If you follow my work at all, you know I'm all about capturing natural, real life moments. That can happen ANYWHERE by just relaxing and letting kids, and families, be themselves. Remind yourself of that before embarking on your next session and just allow yourself to BE...I promise you won't regret it.

I have been waiting for the chance to do one of these and adorable Mr.T was the perfect subject! This little guy had no qualms about digging right in...mmmmm...Love it! This cake needs mentioning too...can you believe how cute?! Mr.T's momma had no prior experience. She just found some fondant recipes online along with a cake picture she liked...5 or 6 hours later with the help of her sis and hubby and WHA-LAH - an adorable fondant cake. Just perfect to celebrate this little guy's first year. Happy Happy Birthday Mr.T!

Beyond lighting, composition, aperture & shutter speeds, clothing selections, and posing, lies the KEY to a great photograph: emotion. It is what gives any photograph that magic. With it, the simplest photograph becomes something that speaks to those who see it. It is what makes a subject in a 2-Dimensional picture become a real-life person that you can connect with. And if you happen to BE the subject, that magic "frozen in time" is what you hang on your wall to cherish and preserve those raw, real moments - what its all about!

Here is another adorable family. They also opted for downtown Boston and I was so excited to get to photograph there again. Don't I get the most gorgeous clients? I had so much fun on this session. Ms.J is such a stunning girl, and so full of sunshine. She just won the award for "Cutest smile and hair" at summer camp and I have to agree. Mr.A was full of giggles for us - what a little doll. These two were just as cute as could be together. It was amazing to watch the two of them interact ... Storybook in Real Life

One of my favorite things to do with my daughter is go to the library. We've been trekking there weekly since she was about 6 months old. It was there that I was introduced to the charming book, "Make Way for Ducklings". At the time we were living in sunny AZ and I wasn't familiar at all with Boston's beautiful Public Gardens and Commons. This trip allowed that book to come to life for us: I even brought a copy of the book and we read it over and over: on the "T", in the park, and even on the duckling statue.

What a gorgeous setting fitting for this beautiful family. I don't think I've ever seen a cuter little "duckling" than this guy. He placed in a contest I did last fall and I was so excited to finally get to photograph him and his sweet parents. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a canvas wrap of one of these for my office...can you guess which one? Thanks so much "C" family - it was such a pleasure working with you!

Summer Discoveries

We're back! After a few weeks in lovely Boston, MA we're home-sweet-home. We had a great time taking in the sights, enjoying the weather, and meeting some wonderful people. One of my favorite things about this job is all the great people and personalities I get to work with.

This family was just great to work with. They were totally laid back and completely allowed me to be the "fly on the wall" as they explored and discovered. I was amazed at these boys: so polite, fun, silly and smart. It took me back to being a kid and enjoying those long lazy days basking in the warm sun, picking fresh fruit and veggies from the garden, splashing in ponds that took my breath away at first. Thanks so much for the fun time guys!

Brrrrr.....it is COLD! I've spent a few months on a little break hiding in my warm apartment with my new baby. Nothin' nicer than a mug of Stephen's hot cocoa, and snugglin' a newborn (pics to come). As nice as that is, you start to get cabin fever after a while, right? So this sweet couple gave me a great excuse to get out of the house. I had the awesome opportunity to capture a few moments for them on their special day. Guess what day they picked to get married? Valentines Day! How cool is that?! Don't they look picture-perfect? Despite the cold weather, they were troopers as usual and we got some really beautiful shots. The sun was close to setting and it gave some really neat effects to the pictures. Here is Part Deuce of our engaged couple. This one was too much fun. They found this awesome old train station in Thomaston, home of the Naugatuck Rail Road. This brave couple not only trekked out with me in the freezing bitter cold, they suffered the wrath of grumpy Quinnipiac University security guards who put out a warrant to beware of our scary white truck. :) And despite it all, look how amazing they both look! This was THE funnest shoot I have ever been on. Our great friends let me go and capture some of that special maternity glow before their little bundle arrives next month. Can you believe what a beautiful, sweet couple this is? It felt like I was peeking through a window into this amazing in-love world they live in. What a great gift to give a new baby! We went out in the gorgeous Autumn air just before sunset and had a great time together. Thanks so much for the laughs guys!

(I am also taking entries from those of you living in Utah - I will be visiting spring/summer of '09). To help me pick the face, I'm enlisting your help and am launching my first ever Blog Contest! The winner will receive a customized outdoor portrait session,
1-2 hours, with 20-30 fully edited images to choose from. This is a $150 value, for FREE!

Entry ages can range from infants to teens. Groups of up to 3 kids will also be considered (sibilings/friends/etc). E-mail me a picture of your child that captures his/her personality and tell me what sets your kid apart. The contest finalists will be featured on this blog. So I'm BACK!! We have officially been in CT about a month. I am totally in awe of all the gorgeous places to shoot. Every time we go out my eyes are pealing the landscape scoping out new photo opps. Our sweet family here has been kind enough to let us camp out out at their home while we wait to get into our apartment next week. I couldn't resist taking their beautiful daughter out for some pictures ... can you believe the eyes on this girl? And to make it even better, we found 5 different spots just driving 10 minutes from thier house! I love CT!! Thanks for humoring me Kylie - I owe you an ice-cream cone. You are one beautiful chicky!

Into the Darkness

Oh my ... what an adventure this shoot was. Little Brooklyn was such a doll, braving the insane 110 degree Arizona weather. Can you believe what a little porcelain doll she is? By the end of the shoot my face was bright pink and I was soaking wet from top to bottom with sweat - she looked as beautiful as ever. And I must say I'm glad we braved the heat - who could resist this little cutie? Thanks so much Kristi - I had a blast! Enjoy!!

This past Saturday was so fun and exciting for me. My friend Kate who is an amazing photographer let me shadow her on a shoot of some mutual friends in our ward. We went to the Mesa Arts Center which has some super fun textures and colors and had a blast playing with this family. I couldn't wait to get home and post a few - so here they are.
